Black Screen After NVIDIA Driver Update: What to Check

If your monitor goes black after an NVIDIA driver update, use these checks to determine whether the problem is the driver, display output, monitor connection, or Windows.

You update your NVIDIA graphics driver, the screen flickers during installation — and then it never comes back.

Or Windows restarts normally, but the monitor loses signal as soon as the operating system begins loading.

A brief screen flicker during a graphics driver installation can happen. A display that remains black afterward is a different problem.

If the issue started immediately after an NVIDIA driver update, the driver is an obvious place to investigate, but do not assume the GPU itself has failed.

If your screen stays black after an NVIDIA driver update:

  1. Give the driver installation time to finish
  2. Try resetting the graphics driver with Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B
  3. Check whether Windows is running despite the black screen
  4. Test another display output, cable, or monitor if available
  5. Disconnect secondary monitors temporarily
  6. Boot Windows into Safe Mode if normal Windows remains unusable
  7. Roll back the display driver if the problem started with the update
  8. Reinstall the NVIDIA driver cleanly if necessary

The most useful clue is when the display stops working.

If you can see the BIOS or motherboard logo but the screen turns black when Windows loads, the graphics driver or Windows display configuration becomes much more suspicious.

1. Did the screen go black during installation?

Graphics driver installations can temporarily interrupt the display signal.

The screen may:

  • flicker
  • briefly turn black
  • change resolution
  • disconnect and reconnect

That alone does not mean something has gone wrong.

If the screen goes black while the driver is actively installing, wait before assuming the PC has frozen.

Listen for signs that Windows is still operating.

For example, audio may continue playing, keyboard lighting may respond, or the system may otherwise appear active.

If the display never returns after the installation should have completed, continue troubleshooting.

2. Reset the graphics driver

Windows includes a keyboard shortcut that can reset the graphics driver without restarting the entire computer.

Press:

Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B

If Windows is responsive, you may hear a short beep and the screen may flicker.

If the display returns immediately afterward, the system itself was probably still running and the problem involved the graphics/display path.

If nothing happens, move on.

3. Check whether Windows is actually running

A black monitor does not necessarily mean the entire PC has crashed.

Look for clues.

Can you hear Windows sounds?

Does pressing Caps Lock change the keyboard indicator?

Can you reach the Windows security screen with:

Ctrl + Alt + Delete

If the PC remains responsive while the monitor stays black, focus on the graphics driver, display output, cable, monitor, and Windows display configuration.

If the entire system is unresponsive, the problem may be broader than display output alone.

4. Check the monitor and cable

The timing of the driver update makes software suspicious, but basic display checks are still worthwhile.

Make sure the monitor is using the correct input.

Then check the HDMI or DisplayPort connection at both ends.

If practical, test:

  • another GPU display output
  • another cable
  • another monitor
  • HDMI instead of DisplayPort
  • DisplayPort instead of HDMI

Do not change everything simultaneously.

Change one variable at a time so the result actually tells you something.

5. Disconnect secondary monitors

Multi-monitor configurations add another variable.

Temporarily shut down the PC and leave only one monitor connected.

Then start Windows again.

If the primary display suddenly works normally with the second monitor disconnected, investigate the multi-monitor configuration rather than immediately blaming the GPU.

After a driver update, Windows may also change which display it considers active.

You can try:

Windows + P

to cycle through Windows display modes if the operating system is responsive.

6. Pay attention to when the screen becomes black

This is one of the strongest diagnostic clues.

No image from the moment the PC powers on

If you cannot see the motherboard or manufacturer logo, BIOS, or anything else before Windows loads, the problem may not be limited to the Windows NVIDIA driver.

Check the monitor, cable, display output, and hardware connections.

BIOS appears, but Windows becomes black

This pattern points much more strongly toward something that changes when Windows loads.

The display driver becomes an obvious suspect.

Windows desktop appears and then goes black

The driver may still be involved, but also pay attention to display configuration, applications, multi-monitor behavior, and whether the graphics driver is crashing after startup.

7. Try Safe Mode if normal Windows remains unusable

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services.

That makes it useful when a normal Windows startup results in a black display.

If the display works in Safe Mode but fails during a normal boot, that is strong evidence that software or a driver loaded during normal startup is involved.

From Windows Recovery, navigate to:

Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart

Then select the appropriate Safe Mode option.

Once inside Safe Mode, you can inspect the display driver without relying on the normal NVIDIA driver environment.

8. Roll back the driver

If everything worked correctly before the NVIDIA update and the problem appeared immediately afterward, returning to the previous driver is a reasonable diagnostic step.

Open:

Device Manager → Display adapters

Select your NVIDIA GPU and open:

Properties → Driver

If Roll Back Driver is available, Windows may be able to restore the previous driver.

Afterward, restart the PC and test again.

If the previous driver restores normal display behavior, you have strong evidence that the newer driver or its interaction with your configuration caused the problem.

9. Perform a clean NVIDIA driver installation

If rolling back is unavailable or the installation itself appears corrupted, reinstalling the NVIDIA driver may help.

Download the appropriate driver for your GPU directly from NVIDIA.

Before installation, close applications that actively use or monitor the GPU.

Run the NVIDIA installer and choose:

Custom (Advanced)

Then select:

Perform a clean installation

This resets NVIDIA driver profiles and installs the selected driver components again.

Restart Windows after the installation completes.

A clean installation is different from repeatedly installing the same driver over the existing installation and hoping the problem disappears.

10. If the newest driver keeps causing the problem

A newer driver is not automatically the best driver for every PC configuration.

If:

  • the previous driver worked normally
  • the problem began immediately after updating
  • returning to the previous driver fixes it

then staying temporarily on the known-good driver can be more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the problematic version.

You can wait for a later NVIDIA driver release and test again.

When troubleshooting, stability is more important than having the highest driver version number.

When hardware becomes more suspicious

The driver update may simply have happened around the same time as another problem.

Hardware deserves more attention if:

  • there is no display even before Windows starts
  • the BIOS is also invisible
  • multiple monitors and cables produce the same result
  • different GPU outputs produce no signal
  • the problem remains after returning to a previously stable driver
  • the GPU repeatedly disappears from Windows
  • display problems also occur outside Windows

At that point, the NVIDIA driver may no longer explain the entire symptom.

What not to do

Do not immediately assume the graphics card is dead.

Do not repeatedly interrupt a driver installation because the screen flickers.

Do not install drivers from random third-party download sites.

Do not change BIOS settings, cables, drivers, Windows settings, and monitor settings all at once.

And do not reinstall Windows as your first troubleshooting step.

The timing of the failure usually provides a much better starting point.
